Greg Abell

My practice as a conflict resolution professional is driven by a core belief that everything of importance happens within the context of interpersonal relationships. My background in psychology led to an interest in the mediation field. In the late 1980’s I served as a founding member and first Board President of the Kitsap County Dispute Resolution Center. Over the past 10 years, I have continued to serve the field in a leadership capacity through my affiliation as Board President for the Washington Mediation Association, and as senior consultant to Consortium for Appropriate Dispute Resolution in Special Education (CADRE).

I am the senior partner at Sound Options Group, LLC, coordinating the design, implementation and delivery of all services. My particular area of expertise is in assisting agencies, organizations and communities in designing and implementing systems for more effectively managing conflict, and facilitating productive and collaborative work environments. As a professional mediator, I have experience mediating highly contentious, multi-party community and institutional disputes. I believe one of my strengths is my ability to weave my experience into my consulting and teaching as I assist individuals and organizations in reducing the costs of conflict.

My education and extensive work experience in private and public administration led me to the discovery that organizations move forward when people are working effectively together. In an increasingly complex and technological world, the need to create positive human interactions is more important than ever. In my experience as a consultant in both the public (transportation) and private (pulp and paper industry) sectors, contract negotiations between management and labor were some of the most polarizing. Assisting polarized parties to identify their interests and find common ground has been my most satisfying work. This recognition of collaboration as a contract negotiation model prompted me to become trained and certified as a mediator in the early 1990’s.

As the managing partner in Sound Options Group LLC, I focus on cultivating a business that practices the same principles and skills we teach. My affiliation with Sound Options Group began in 1994, and much of my work now includes intervening in organizational conflict and managing Sound Options Group contracts. I am rewarded as I see Sound Options Group set the standard on the leading edge of an emerging field.
